School readiness
School readiness is defined as the ability of a school to allow children to participate successfully in formal schooling. It is important in educational psychology because difficulties in entering into the school can have a direct implication on children’s adjustment, participation and subsequent learning.
Malaysian research gap
The gap as identified in the existing literature implies that school readiness measures in the context of Malaysia are not tested specifically for preschool populations. The Malaysian population is culturally and linguistically diverse, and as a result, any instrument developed elsewhere is not relevant in the Malaysian context.
Purpose of the SRS
The SRS is the self development measure being validated in this practical study with the objective of assessing children’s school readiness characteristics, and determining whether the scores are valid and reliable enough for utilisation in the Malaysian content. The study therefore analyses convergent validity which analyses relationship between SRS and BESSI, concurrent validity to evaluate relationship between SRS and CBQ-VSF, internal consistency among the SRS items and test retest reliability to assess the stability of SRS scores across one week retest.
Methods
The methods followed are to collect data from 30 Malaysian preschool children aged 4-6 years, and the measures used are SRS, BESSI and CBQ-VSF. The test-retest interval was for 1 week and statistical software used is SPSS. The significance level is .05 and correlation used is Pearson r correlation. The demographic profile of the respondents indicates that there were 16 males and 14 females in the age group between 4 to 6 years, and the informant i.e. parent/caregiver shows that there were 22 mothers and 6 fathers and 2 other caregivers participated.
Results
Descriptive statistics – with respect to SRS, the mean value is 49.39 and standard deviation is 9.67. For BESSI, the mean value is 59.61 and standard deviation is 8.41. CBQ-VSF has a mean value of 70.75 and standard deviation of 6.96. The SRS mean indicates moderate variation in reported school readiness score across the sample whereas BESSI showed a similar spread, while CBQ-VSF clearly indicates lower variability.
Convergent validity – the application of Pearson correlation in order to evaluate the relationship between SRS and BESSI shows: r(28)=.83, p<.001. This indicates a strong and positive significant relationship. The data suggest that the children who have received higher SRS scores are also likely to receive higher BESSI scores. The coordination of .83 indicates a strong evidence of convergent validity because BESSI assesses closely related early skills in connection with school readiness.
Concurrent validity – the relationship between SRS and CBQ-VSF as reflected by Pearson correlation implies r(28)=.64, p<.001. This indicates a moderately strong positive relationship. There is a closed relationship between higher SRS scores with higher CBQ-VSF scores. This clearly indicates the evidence of concurrent validity, however the relationship is weaker in comparison to SRS-BESSI correlation. This finding is also very reasonable because BESSI is responsible for evaluating early skills relevant to school readiness and CBQ-VSF evaluates the temperament of a child and behavioural characteristics.
Internal consistency of SRS
The calculation indicates a Cronbach Alpha value of .88 which implies good internal consistency. It is therefore good enough to measure the school readiness construct with a high degree of consistency.
Test retest reliability
The same participants were again used after a week and the result for SRS showed r(28)=.99, p<.001. This implies that the participants retained their relative ranking on the SRS after one week and it implies that the instrument is Highly Effective in producing stable scores when school readiness characteristics have not changed much.
Discussion
The findings from the entire analysis support the psychometric quality of the SRS. The relationship between the SRS and BESSI was the strongest whereas the relationship between SRS and CBQ-VSF was also statistically significant but it is comparatively weaker. The overall findings from the study are highly consistent with the multi dimensional view of school readiness.
Implications of the finding
For parents – for the parents, SRS can be useful in identifying areas where the child requires additional support before entering the primary school.
For teachers – teachers can make use of SRS results for specific improvement of children within the classroom activities.
For schools – SRS is highly beneficial for schools in supporting early transition planning by identifying children that need additional assistance.
