  1. Reflect on an activating event in your life that has brought unpleasant consequences to you in recent times (within the past six months).
  2. Write your responses based on this event into the template below. You will complete 3 (THREE) sections.

A – Activating event – the grade I received in my university assignment was lower than what I expected despite having given my full effort in doing research work and preparing the report.
B – Belief – I think it would be difficult for me to achieve excellent academic grading. All my efforts were wasted.
C – Consequences – it leads to unpleasant emotions in the form of disappointment, frustration and anxiety, which in turn leads to unpleasant action in the form of avoiding the feedback, and a lower overall motivation to start working on the next assignment. This leads to unpleasant results in the form of reduced productivity level and increased level of stress in managing future assessments.
D – Disputation – Although I received a lower overall grade, I believe that one such poor result cannot define my abilities, and I can definitely improve in my future performance. The grade I received is not what I expected but I can use the feedback to identify my weaknesses which I can address while doing my future assignments.
E – Effect – this particular approach leads to new emotion in the form of motivation, confidence and optimism, new action which will include a clear review of feedback, ask for clarification and apply it in future assignment. The pleasant result would be in the form of improved academic performance, better awareness of assignment requirements and improved overall confidence in completing future tasks.

Personality reflection

The Big Five Trait selected for analysis is conscientiousness, and the results from the big 5 test shows a high level of conscientiousness. It is because of this particular trait I am able to efficiently manage my unpleasant experience, and also remain properly organised, disciplined and goal oriented. With the feedback, I can identify the areas that need improvement and create a proper plan to deal with future assignments. Instead of being disappointed, it is my conscientiousness trait that encourages me to focus on my learning and improve my academic performance.

Mindfulness reflection

The most significant mindfulness technique that supported me in managing this situation is mindful breathing. At times of poor academic results, I spend time focusing on my breathing and observing my thoughts without using them. It helps me in reducing anxiety to a great extent and remaining calm rather than to take emotional decisions. With this mindfulness breathing ability, I can maintain my focus during busy academic periods and undertake effective decisions to achieve better results.
