MPU3412 Community Service – Project Activities Report
Purpose
The objective of the assignment is to evaluate the learner’s knowledge and understanding in applying the skills and social responsibilities within the community; apply communication skills, leadership and working as a team; and practise skills in information management, projects and entrepreneurship.
Part I: Community Service Project
Community service refers to voluntary and unpaid activities undertaken by individuals or groups to address community needs and contribute to the well-being and development of society. It promotes social responsibility, civic awareness, cooperation, and active participation in improving the quality of life at the local or national level.
Activity 1: Community Service Project
Carry out ONE small-scale community service project in your immediate surroundings based on a real contemporary social issue. The activity should address a genuine need, issue, or concern in the community while responding to it through meaningful action and participation.
The project may be carried out individually or with family members, relatives, housemates, colleagues, friends, neighbours or coursemates (not more than five members, including yourself). The written submission must be prepared individually.
The activity should address one or more contemporary community issues, such as:
- Rising cost of living and B40 financial pressure
- Food insecurity and food-bank support
- Mental health and community well-being
- Educational support and the digital divide
- A clean environment, waste and recycling
- Youth employability and skills
- Support for marginalised groups (OKU, elderly, refugees, Orang Asli)
- Flood readiness and disaster response
- Online safety and cyber awareness
Organise the Activity 1 report into the following parts:
- Choosing Your Community Issue: State which current issue in your community you acted on and why, backed by local observation and at least one recent source (news report, statistic or official figure).
- Project Overview and Who It Helps: What you did, when and where, and which group of people it was meant to help.
- The People Behind the Project: Every person who took part, how each is connected to you, and the task each person handled.
- Aims and the Difference You Wanted to Make: Two to three clear, realistic aims and the specific benefit you hoped the community would gain.
- How You Planned and Ran It: Timeline, resources, rough budget and the main steps from idea to completion.
- Problems Faced and How You Adapted: Difficulties during the project and how the team changed its approach.
- Real Results, Evidence and What You Learned: What changed for the people you helped, supported by photographs, short testimonials or numbers, and your most important lesson.
Activity 2: Video Presentation of the Community Service Project
Prepare a video presentation based on the same project carried out in Activity 1. The video should show your direct involvement, explain the purpose of the project and the community issue addressed, demonstrate how the contemporary issue was tackled, and stay consistent with the activity, participants, location and outcomes described in the Activity 1 report.
The video should include:
- Setting the scene: Introduce yourself and name the contemporary issue your project responds to.
- Why this issue matters now: Show the local situation and explain why the issue needs attention right now.
- Showing the action: Real footage of the main things you did during the project.
- The people and the difference made: Let the people involved be seen or heard, with clear evidence of what changed.
- Your reflection in front of the camera: What the experience taught you personally.
- Closing message and call to action: One clear takeaway and an invitation for viewers to act on the same issue.
Activity 3: Reflective Journal
Using the self-reflective questions below as a guideline, write a Reflective Journal (RJ) on the community service activity. The reflection should go beyond description by analysing the experience, connecting it to broader social issues and considering its future implications.
- What did carrying out this project teach you about the everyday reality of the issue you chose, particularly something you had not fully understood before you began?
- Describe a situation when the project did not go as planned or made you feel uncomfortable. How did you respond, and what did that experience reveal about you?
- By working directly with the people affected by the issue, what did you learn about your own strengths or limitations, and what would you do differently next time?
- Now that the project is complete, what is your view on what is needed for someone to “truly serve the community”, and has that view changed?
Part II: Online Class Participation
Discuss the following topic in the forum and submit proof of your participation in the online discussions:
Small-scale community-based social service projects have the potential to make a significant impact in addressing pressing contemporary social issues, such as the rising cost of living, mental health, and the digital divide, comparable to the contributions of large-scale national programs. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Share and exchange views with your course mates.
Experts Answer on Above Questions on Community Service
Selected community issue
The community issue selected for analysis is food insecurity among low income B40 households. The increasing food price is a major challenge for the majority of the low income households to afford nutritious meals. The main focus of this project is on addressing this need by collecting and distributing essential groceries to financially vulnerable households.
Project overview and who it helps
The title of the project is community food basket drive and it was carried out on 12th October 2026 in the local neighbourhood in Penang, Malaysia. Essential groceries such as rice, cooking oil, canned food and noodles were distributed to five low income households.
The people behind the project
The main people include myself who is the main coordinator of the project, my friends who collected grocery donation, siblings sorted and packed food items, neighbours who helped identify households that needed support and coursemates who helped in recording expenses and documenting the activity.
Aims and differences to achieve
The main focus is to provide essential groceries to five financially vulnerable households, reduce beneficiaries immediate food expenses, and and encourage community members to be involved in supporting low income families.
Planning and process
During the 5 to 6 October, I have identified beneficiaries and planned the project, while on 7th to 9th October, the activities involving collection of donations and grocery purchases were made. On 10th October, the packaging process was carried out and on 11th and 12th, the distribution were made and feedbacks were recorded.
Estimated budget – the budget for the project was RM250 which was funded through my personal contributions and donations.
Problems faced and how it was dealt
The problem was mainly in collecting the donation as it arrived late which created a shortage of planned items. The missing essentials were purchased using the available budget and prioritised basic food supplies.
Real results, evidence and learning
The main focus was on providing five households with essential groceries and the project showed how careful planning and teamwork is crucial in addressing immediate community needs.
Reflective journal
What did the project teach you about the issue?
I have understood that food security is a major problem and learnt the importance of practical support without judging beneficiaries.
Describe the situation that did not go as planned?
The receipt of donation was late which was handled by prioritising essential elements and finding alternatives within the budget.
What did you learn about your strengths and limitations?
My strength is teamwork but the limitations I was exposed to are the restricted funds that limits the support to the household with expected groceries.
What does it mean to truly serve the community?
It implies the actual people’s needs, training them with dignity, and providing practical and responsible support. I learnt that service should involve sustained commitment rather than a one time activity.
Forum response
I agree to the fact that the small scale community service projects can make a significant impact. A neighbourhood food drive can quickly provide groceries to B40 families, and the digital-literacy workshops can help older residents access online services. These projects are crucial in encouraging direct participation and responding to specific local needs.
But small projects cannot replace the large scale national programmes which requires greater funding, wider coverage and the capacity to address structural problems. It is therefore important that the community initiatives and national programs should complement each other.
