HMRD 521 Human Resource Management – Reflective Journal Analysis
Instructions
Prepare an individual two-page reflection journal demonstrating how your understanding of the line manager’s role in managing people has developed through HRMD 521.
Your reflection should:
- critically engage with relevant HRM concepts;
- connect theory with workplace experience or professional observations;
- use practical examples and critically evaluate management practices; and
- demonstrate self-awareness and identify how you would improve your own HRM practice.
Reflection Questions
- The Role of the Line Manager
How has your understanding of the line manager’s HR responsibilities changed since the beginning of the module? Identify one HRM responsibility you previously regarded mainly as an HR function but now recognise as a line-management responsibility. Why does this matter for organisational performance?
- Technology and People Management
Identify one HR activity in your workplace or an organisation familiar to you that could be improved through technology, HR information systems or employee data. Critically discuss the potential benefits and key risks, such as privacy, data security, fairness or over-reliance on technology.
- Diversity, Fairness and Inclusion
Identify one diversity, inclusion, discrimination or workplace fairness challenge that a line manager may encounter. How should the manager respond? Distinguish between legal compliance and actively creating a fair and inclusive workplace.
- Leading in the New World of Work
Identify two capabilities that line managers need to manage people effectively in an environment shaped by AI, digitalisation, flexible work and changing employee expectations. Explain your choices and assess whether managers in an organisation familiar to you are adequately prepared.
- Personal Management Commitment
Based on your learning in HRMD 521, identify one people-management practice you will start, stop or change. Explain what you will do differently, why the change is necessary, and how it could benefit both employees and the organisation.
Experts Answer on Above Reflective Questions on HRM
The role of line managers
My understanding about the role of line managers has improved significantly after undertaking this module, as I am clear now that exam manager is responsible for providing policies, systems and guidance, while the line manager observes the performance, gives feedback, sets expectations, identify development needs and addresses any kind of performance related problems.
Technology and people management
The role of an HR information system is significant in improving employee performance management. Managers can make use of digital systems in order to record objectives, progress, feedback and development needs. It will help in timely evaluation of performance and better availability to make informed decisions. There are still concerns in relation to privacy and security risks, and it is therefore important to make responsible use of the information system in supporting managerial judgement rather than replacing it.
Diversity, fairness and inclusion
It is important for the line manager to remain fair enough in making all the decisions and support diversity and inclusion within the workplace. There are possibilities of facing unequal opportunities for promotion or developments especially when managers unconsciously favour employees with whom they communicate more frequently. It is important that the managers should make use of transparent and job related criteria for promotion, training and performance evaluation.
Leading in the new world of work
The two important essential skills and capabilities needed are digital/AI literacy and adaptive people leadership. Digital/AI literacy is highly essential because managers are required to understand how digital tools affect work, productivity and the decision making process. Adaptive people leadership is also very essential because flexible work and changing employee expectations require managers to manage outcomes rather than simply monitor the physical presence.
Performance management commitment
With respect to performance management, my knowledge has gained significantly, as I will consider this performance management commitment as a regular and evidence based practice rather than an occasional formal activity. I will achieve this by scheduling short, consistent conversations with employees to discuss any development needed, and such kind of regular discussion will provide clear expectations and opportunities that employees are looking for, and ultimately contribute improved contribution from them in achieving organisational goals.
