Purpose
This assignment aims to enhance students’ understanding of the anatomy and physiology of cardiovascular system. It also encourages analytical thinking by examining how disturbances in circulation affect patient responses, tissue perfusion, and overall health.

Anatomy and physiological roles of the cardiovascular system
The cardiovascular system comprises heart, blood vessels and the blood, and its main purpose is to transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste products. The heart has four Chambers known as right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. A nurse normally monitors the heart rate, blood pressure and the ECG readings in order to evaluate the overall functioning of the cardiac system especially within patients having hypertension and coronary artery disease.
The arteries are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from the heart, and the deoxygenated blood is returned by veins. The role of capillaries is to allow the exchange of oxygen and nutrients with tissues.
The transportation of blood between the heart and the lungs is performed through pulmonary circulation, and systemic circulation is responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to body tissues.
Effects of shocks on cardiovascular function
The main cause of shock is the inadequacy of blood circulation to supply oxygen to tissues. The common causes include trauma from road accidents, severe dengue, or major blood loss after surgery.
Impact on body function
The shock has a direct impact on body function as it leads to a decline in the blood pressure level, tissue perfusion becomes poor, creates difficulty in normal functioning of the cells, and delivery of oxygen to organs is reduced.
Patient responses
In such situations, the patient may experience a rapid pulse rate, pale skin colour, clammy skin, reduced level of consciousness and low urine output. The patient with dengue shock syndrome faces plasma leakage and reduced blood volume. In such a situation, the circulation of blood along with prevention of any organ failure can be achieved through immediate IV fluid management.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy
The hormonal changes during pregnancy are crucial as they support the fetal growth and mother in the process of childbirth. The role of estrogen is to increase the flow of blood to the uterus, and also contribute toward breast enlargement. Progesterone contributes towards relaxing uterine muscles and also supports pregnancy maintenance. The human chorionic gonadotropin helps in maintaining early pregnancy, and it is responsible for morning sicknesses faced by mothers. Oxytocin is responsible for the contraction of the uterus during labour and it also assists in ejecting milk after childbirth.
Maternal physiological adaptations
The hormonal changes lead to an increase in the heart rate, weight gain, breast development, frequent urination and changes of mode on a frequent basis.
