Microbiology, Parasitology & Communicable Diseases – Transmission & Impact
Context
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), also known as nosocomial infections, are infections acquired by patients during the course of receiving medical or surgical care in healthcare settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, or outpatient clinics. These infections, which can affect various parts of the body, may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Both hospitalized patients and healthcare workers are at risk of developing HAIs, making their prevention and control a critical aspect of healthcare practice.
Assessment Task
You are required to:
1. Discuss the most common types of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), including the body systems they affect and examples of causative microorganisms.
2. Explain the key modes of transmission for HAIs within healthcare settings and discuss how these routes contribute to their spread among patients and healthcare workers.
3. Explain its impact on patient care and treatment outcomes.
Instructions
The written assignment should include:
Introduction
Define healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and explain common types of HAIs and their significance in healthcare.

Conclusion
The conclusion summarizes the main points presented in the essay.
Experts Answer on Above Questions on Nursing
Common types of health associated infection
The common types of Healthcare associated infections are urinary tract infection which affects the urinary system such as escherichia coli, enterococcus spp. Another common type of Healthcare associated infection is surgical site infection which affects skin, soft tissue and surgical wound. The hospital acquired pneumonia is another infection type which affects the respiratory system and lungs. The ventilator associated with pneumonia affects the lower respiratory tract and the central line associated with bloodstream infection affects the bloodstream/ vascular system. The Gastro intestinal infection affects the digestive system, and the skin and soft tissue infection directly impacts the skin and underlying tissues. All these infections are highly significant and surgery or prolonged hospitalisation can increase opportunities for infection.
Key Modes of HAI transmission
This can be transmitted in the form of contact transmission where by microorganisms can spread through contaminated hands, droplet transmission in the form of respiratory droplets released through coughing, sneezing or talking, airborne transmission, common vehicle transmission such as contaminated food, water, medications, or medical equipment, and finally bloodborne transmission in the form of contaminated needles, sharps or exposure to infected blood can transmit pathogens to patients.
Impact on patient care and treatment outcomes
HAI can have a direct impact on the length of hospital stays and it will result in increased cost and delay recovery. There would be a requirement for additional antibiotics, diagnostic tests and further procedures, and it can also lead to complications, readmission or increased mortality among patients.
