Green Sustainability Project Proposal Malaysia | Community Service
In this community service proposal, your group explains green sustainability, reviews two existing initiatives, and identifies one campus or community problem, such as single-use plastics or food waste, backed by your own small survey, interviews or observation. You then plan an awareness activity with objectives, audience, timeline, roles and a way to measure its impact.
Proposal (15%)
CLO1: Rewrite a proposal of a community service project which has social impact (C2, PLO11).
In groups of 10, students are required to prepare a Green Sustainability Project Proposal focusing on an environmental or sustainability issue relevant to the campus or community.
- Begin with a brief explanation of green sustainability, including its meaning, importance and relevance to the community.
- Research and discuss two existing green sustainability initiatives that you find interesting, explaining what each initiative does and what can be learned from it.
- Identify one green sustainability problem to address. The problem statement must be supported by a small-scale preliminary investigation (observation, a short survey, interviews, photographs or other relevant data) that shows why the problem requires attention, rather than relying only on assumptions.
- Propose a small-scale awareness activity to address the issue, e.g. a social media campaign, infographic, short video, exhibition, awareness booth, poster campaign or educational activity.
- Explain the project objectives, target audience, proposed activity, implementation plan, timeline, team responsibilities, expected outcomes and method for measuring the impact of the activity.
The written proposal must be no more than 20 pages, excluding the cover page, references and appendices. Use a minimum of five credible references, with in-text citations and references in APA format.

Experts Response on Above Research Proposal on Green Sustainability
Introduction to Green sustainability
By the term green sustainability, it means to protect the environment by conserving natural resources, promoting responsible consumption and reducing pollution. The sustainable waste management policy in Malaysia supports the national goal of reducing single use plastics and improving recycling. The waste from plastic is a major concern while white because the packaging has a major role to play in plastic consumption. The road map of Malaysia with respect to zero single use plastics 2018-2030 is a basic framework for reducing disposable plastics.
Green sustainability initiatives
The first initiative is Malaysia’s road Map towards zero single use plastics 2018-2030 where the emphasis is on reducing single use plastics and encouraging environmentally friendly alternatives. The second initiative is Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) campus waste management whereby the university implements waste segregation, recycling and plastic reduction measures throughout its campuses. The University has stated that 29% of its total waste was recycled in 2024 and 71% went to landfill. The ways in which waste tracking and campus-wide participation can improve recycling practices is evident in its green office and green desasiswa programmes.
Problem statement
The use of single plastic packaging from takeaway food and drink is a major source of waste that can be avoided in university campuses in Malaysia. There is a significant contribution of disposable cups, straws, bags and food containers to environmental pollution. The given project is therefore aimed at achieving reduction on excessive single use plastic consumption among students and cafeteria customers.
Preliminary research findings
The main focus area of Investigation in the given project is on single use plastic consumption at a Malaysian campus by utilising survey as a medium to investigate with 30 students and direct observation of the cafeteria. The investigation will record the number of students that use disposable cups, bags or food containers, number of students that carry reusable bottles or containers, availability and visibility of the recycle bin, and the process of discarding plastic waste after lunch.
Proposed awareness activity
The title proposed is “bring your own, reduce plastic waste”
This will be promoted using posters, social media infographics and campus awareness booth model to encourage students to make use of replaceable disposable packaging with reusable containers and bottles.
Project objectives
The main objectives of the project are:
- To increase the awareness of single use plastic pollution within campus students.
- To encourage the use of reusable bottles, cups and food containers.
- To encourage the reduction of disposable plastic packaging within participants.
- To measure changes in environmental awareness and reported behaviour after the campaign.
Target audience
The audience included the college students from Malaysian Universities, cafeteria customers, food vendors and campus staff.
Implementation plan
The implementation would be carried out in phases whereby in the research stage, the focus would be on surveying students and observing waste in the cafeteria. In the preparation phase, posters and infographics would be prepared, and in the promotion stage, the campaign message would be shared through campus social media. In the implementation phase, an awareness booth would be operated along with distribution of educational materials. Finally in the evaluation phase, the comparison of pre-campaign and post-campaign survey responses would be carried out.
Project timeline
The project activities would be accomplished in 4 weeks time with each major activity carried out in weeks time.
Team responsibility
The different aspects of the project would be assigned to different team members in order to accomplish the project goals within time. The activities like researching and references, surveying and observation, poster and infographic design, awareness both and promotion, project coordination and timeline, and data analysis and final report would be given to different members.
Expected outcome
The completion of the project would result in an improvement in the awareness of plastic pollution among students, will enhance interest among students in reusable alternatives, and also help in identifying barriers to reducing disposable packaging on campus.
Impact measurement
The measurement of the entire project performance would be carried out through pre- campaign and post-campaign surveys, number of students reached by the campaign and observed use of disposable packaging before and after the campaign.
