Introduction

The Kachru three Circles model divides global English into inner circle, outer circle and expanding circle. This model is quite effective in explaining the spread of English, but it is also criticized for treating English varieties and users as fixed and separate.
Study 1 – the first study selected is criticized for extensive emphasis on fixed geographical categories. The use of English is very difficult and complex because speakers use it for multiple varieties and move between traditional circle categories. This model therefore does not completely take into account multilingualism and linguistic mobility.
Study 2 – the second study places significant emphasis on the native/non- native distinction and regards them as problematic. The English users in the outer and expanding circle are not simply learners or secondary users, many of them utilise English routinely and develop legitimate International varieties.

Overall critique

The entire analysis of both the studies indicates that the Kachru model remains useful as a starting point, but the three fixed categories simplify the diversity, fluidity and changing functions of English worldwide. The model is quite effective in explaining the Global spread of English but it does not fully represent hybrid identities, speakers and movement across traditional circle boundaries.
