HBEF2103 Educational Psychology – Active Learning and Alternative Assessment Analysis

Part 1: Written Assignment

Scenario

At a community learning centre, a facilitator (Encik Haikal) discovers that the adult/youth learning sessions he conducts are receiving low engagement. Many pzarticipants feel bored because he relies solely on one-way lecturing methods (teacher-centred) and administers weekly written quizzes that induce high test anxiety among the participants. The participants are grouped as Group A, Group B and Group C (see the diagram in the assignment paper).

Encik Haikal aims to transform his delivery approach towards active, student-centred learning as well as design fairer assessment methods that do not rely strictly on conventional paper-and-pencil tests.

Assignment Questions (answer all sections)

  1. Design of Active Learning Activity – Based on Topic 6 (Social Constructivist Approaches) and Topic 7 (Student-Centred Instruction): select ONE simple fundamental topic or skill (e.g. Effective Communication Skills, Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy or Basic Health Science); formulate ONE student-centred learning activity applying Scaffolding / Peer Tutoring OR Cooperative Learning; and explain clearly how the steps of the activity provide balanced opportunities for participation across Group A, Group B and Group C.
  2. Design of Alternative Assessment and Evaluation Rubric – Based on Topic 10 (Classroom Assessment and Grading): propose TWO alternative assessment methods (e.g. Performance / Simulation Assessment or E-Portfolio Assessment) to replace conventional written tests.
  3. Educational Psychology Reflection – Reflect on how integrating active learning activities with alternative assessment strategies can foster students’ intrinsic motivation (Topic 8).
  4. Summary – Summarise the main points covered in the essay.

Part 2: Online Class Participation

Participate actively in the myINSPIRE forum after watching the film Taare Zameen Par, and discuss with reference to Topic 8 (Motivation and Classroom Anxiety) and Topic 10 (Classroom Assessment and Grading):

  1. In the film, rigid written testing and relentless criticism shattered Ishaan’s intrinsic motivation and self-esteem. How do rigid, one-size-fits-all examinations trigger severe test anxiety and learned helplessness among learners with learning differences?
  2. Propose TWO concrete, ethical pedagogical actions a teacher can implement to establish an emotionally safe learning environment for struggling learners.
  3. Mr Nikumbh used authentic performance-based tasks (the art competition) to evaluate Ishaan’s true capabilities. Why are alternative assessments (e.g. performance tasks or portfolios) considered more ethical, equitable and aligned with inclusive education?

Answer all three questions and respond to at least TWO classmates’ posts (100–200 words per post). Select your best FIVE postings and include screenshots (JPG or PNG) showing your name, discussion title, day, date and time in the assignment.

Design of active learning activity

Topic – financial literacy – creating a personal budget
The approach followed is cooperative learning. A monthly budget is required to be prepared and the participants work in mixed ability groups, and each group gets a card that shows income, rent, food, transport, savings and other expenses.
Introduction – Encik Haikal provides explanations about income, savings, expenses and budgeting.
Group discussion – a discussion is carried out within participants to identify the expenses that are essential and can be reduced.
Budget preparation – there is an allocation of RM2500 to each group across the expense categories.
Peer review – Groups exchange budgets and identify possible improvements.
Presentation – Each group provides detailed information about its budget and justifies any financial decisions.
Balanced participation – there is balanced participation ensured by allocating different tasks to each of the groups such as group A is responsible for identifying expenses where group B is in calculating totals and savings. Group C evaluates spending choices. These roles are then rotated to make sure that each participant contributes to discussion and the facilitator provides examples and prompts to participants who need additional support.

Alternative assessment and evaluation rubric

Method 1 – performance based assessment
The participants would be required to complete a task on budgeting by utilising RM2500. They have to allocate the income, perform calculation of expenses and justify their saving decisions.
Method 2 – e-portfolio assessment
Participants would be required to compile a Portfolio that comprises completed budget, a short reflection on spending decisions, revised budget that considers feedback, and evidence of the learning progress.

Evaluation rubric

Accuracy of calculations has 4 marks, appropriate allocation of income has 3 marks, justification of financial decision has 2 marks, and reflection and improvement has 1 mark making it total of 10 marks.

Educational psychology reflection

Active learning is an important way to improve intrinsic motivation within participants by allowing them to have meaningful choices, practical challenges and opportunities to collaborate. By assigning the task of creating a personal budget, the learning process is quite relevant to everyday life and improves participant’s sense of competence. With peer interaction, it is possible for the learner to develop relatedness, while the opportunities to make independent financial decisions support autonomy. With performance based task, it becomes easier for the students to reflect their progress through practical achievement and reflection, and they don’t have to depend on high pressure written examinations.

Test anxiety and learned helplessness

In rigid examinations, the learners are being tested against identical standards. The chances of students making mistakes are significantly higher from repeated failure, public criticism, and pressure to achieve and they all lead to low self esteem and avoidance of learning. When the learners have a belief that their effort will not improve their results, they start developing learned helplessness. These effects are clearly evident in Ishaan in Taare Zameen Par because his difficulties with written work are considered as laziness rather than a sign of dyslexia.

Two ethical pedagogical actions

The two ethical pedagogical actions can be to provide differentiated instruction and private encouragement, and secondary to establish psychologically safe classroom routines.

Why are alternative assessments more ethical and equitable?

Alternative assessments are more ethical and equitable because they support inclusive education by accommodating different ways of demonstrating learning. As in the case of Taare Zameen Par, Ishaan’s artwork reveals his abilities which the conventional testing failed to recognise. However alternative assessments should compliment appropriate written assessments rather than automatically replacing every formal examination.
