Experts Answer on Above Questions on Primary Education
The role of dance in physical education
Dance is one of the integral parts of Ireland’s primary physical education curriculum, and it is positively promoted within NCCA wellbeing specification because of various advantages possible such as children’s physical, emotional, social and creative development simultaneously. Creative Dance encourages children to explore body movements which improves their body awareness, spatial awareness and confidence level. Folk dance is quite significant in enhancing cultural identity, as Irish dance lile Siege of Ennis needs pupils to work together and respect shared movement patterns. Dance is also highly promoted because it supports all the four dimensions of wellbeing as identified within the NCCA wellbeing including physical well being, emotional wellbeing, social wellbeing and creative wellbeing.
Three lesson plan outline
The learning plan is to allow children to explore creative movement safely while improving their balance, coordination, rhythm, teamwork and confidence.
Lesson 1 – Creative Dance
The stimulus is the Gruffalo – Julia Donaldson. Children would be required to imitate woodland animals through walking and travelling movements. The main activity is to create movements representing Fox, owl and snake using body levels. The resources needed would be story book, bluetooth speaker, scarves and the fundamental movement skills that they will improve are balancing, travelling, jumping and twisting. The instrumental music of forest dance is required in the background.
Lesson 2 – Irish folk dance
The stimulus is the Rattlin Bog (a traditional Irish folk song). The warm up activities for the children include circle walking, skipping and rhythm clapping. Children would learn the basic Irish folk dance movements, and the resources needed for music players and floor markers. The fundamental movement skills they can improve are skipping, side-stepping, turning and coordination.
Lesson 3 – creative movement
The stimulus is the poem – the wind. Children need to imitate gentle and strong wind movements around the hall. Groups create dances showing changing weather by utilising ribbons to represent wind, rain and sunshine. The resources needed are scarves, ribbons and bluetooth speakers, and the fundamental movement skills to develop are running, stretching, turning and dynamic balance.
Critique of the wellbeing specification
Emotional and relational education – the development of emotional literacy is ensured by the NCCA (2025) by helping stage 4 pupils to recognise emotions, manage conflicts, build resilience and develop relationships. The major focus is on emotional Regulation and student voice as compared to previous SPHE guidance, but it requires a great amount of confidence within the teacher in achieving successful implementation.
Health education
The specification is quite effective in promoting decision making with respect to nutrition, physical activity, sleep, online safety and substance misuse. Digital wellbeing is quite important in reflecting current challenges faced by the Irish adolescents.
Community and belonging
This particular strand requires people to value diversity, inclusion and environmental responsibility. The activities that encourage participation in local communities are good at strengthening social responsibility.
Professional learning and support needs
Curriculum organisation – Structured long term planning templates that integrate SPHE should be provided to teachers to ensure proper coverage of all the three strands.
Pedagogy – The focus of professional development should be on restorative conversations, cooperative learning, enquiry based activities and trauma informed teaching strategies to encourage the participation of students.
Inclusive practice – Teachers should be provided with training with respect to Universal design for learning, differentiated instruction, and culturally responsive teaching in order to support students with English as an additional language.
Assessments – there is a need for formative assessment methods to allow students to reflect journals, self assessment checklists and learning conversations.
Whole School support – the successful implementation requires effective leadership, dedicated coordinators, collaborations with parents and partnerships with organisations like National Educational psychological service and Tusla education support service.
