Robert: Hello Kelly
Kelly: Hello Robert
Robert: Kelly, um, I would like to talk to you, um, about some stuff that is really bothering me at the moment.
Kelly: Uh-hm.
Robert: I am getting very uptight and worried about things, and I thought that a chat with you would help.

Kelly: Mm-hm, you are feeling anxious Robert, and would like to talk about things that are worrying you.
Robert: Yes, I would, umm… What is getting me down is, ah, really that I feel totally overwhelmed, and I feel that I am not coping with the amount that I must do, and there is just a lot going on in my life too.
Kelly: Umm, mm, lots of pressure in relation to what is happening to you in your life right now.
Robert: Yes, all the part of my life seems to be pushing on top of each other and it seems that the week is not long enough. There is work…training I do outside of work…social relationships I need to maintain. I feel like I can’t fit it all in.
Kelly: Mm-hm
Robert: Yes, I feel like I am going under.
Kelly: Mm-hm. You feel overcrowded with work, other pressures outside work and not enough time for your social life, and it is really getting you down.
Robert: Yes, and the more the work seems to pile up, the worse the situation gets. I feel overwhelmed and don’t know how I will get myself out of this.
Kelly: Ok, so work is the main pressure in your life, it is taking over and becoming a heavy load by the sound of things.
Robert: Yes, it is, and I guess it is a bit of trap, because I am a counsellor and as a result of being a counsellor, I find that people who are emotionally disturbed makes demands on me. They think that I am available at any time, and it is very hard for me to say “No, I won’t be able to schedule you in this week, as I am fully booked”. Instead, I would assist them during my lunch break or after hours.
Kelly: What seems to be happening is that you find it difficult to say “No”, when you see people who need help, and consequently your lunch breaks and after hours become overloaded by meeting those people’s needs.
Robert: Yes, I suppose that is the essence of my problem-I have not learnt how to say “No” properly and have not yet learnt how to set limits on what to do. By talking to you I am realizing that maybe it is time that I start saying “No, I have needs, and that I can’t always put others needs first”.
Kelly: Robert, you seem to be saying that the answer is to learn to say “No” and set some limits but that it will be difficult for you in that you have not been able to do that up to now.

Robert: Yes, you are right! I now realize that the problem lies within me, and I can attend to the issue and learn to say “No”. Thank you for listening to me
