Assignment:
Nurses are critical to delivering on the promise of “leaving no one behind”. They make a central contribution to national and global targets related to a range of health priorities (WHO, 2020).

Identify a change initiative that you were involved in and critically discuss its implementation in relation to achieving an established healthcare outcome. Link your discussion back to the assignment statement. Explore factors that helped or hindered the implementation of the change initiative. Use relevant literature to support your critical discussion aswell as your clinical or professional experience to demonstrate your understanding of the leadership concepts.

Student guide to assignment
This guide has been developed to help you prepare and submit your assignment for the Leadership: Professional and Clinical module delivered as part of the PGDip and MSc Nursing and PGCert / PGDip and MSc Advanced Leadership programmes. This assignment is very different to the one you may have just completed for the ARM module. It is much broader and requires you to demonstrate a broad knowledge of the different concepts covered during the module. You should read this guide carefully and refer to it when preparing your assignment. You are also reminded to refer to the student writing guidelines during this process and to adhere to the School requirements on the submission of assignments.

Getting started
This assignment requires you to draw on 3 concepts covered during this module and critically discuss the statement “Nurses are critical to delivering on the promise of “leaving no one behind”. They make a central contribution to national and global targets related to a range of health priorities” (State of the World’s Nursing Report. WHO, 2020). When choosing your concepts do not choose more than two from each module pillar (list provided below). This will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and your ability to apply theory to practice.

This assignment is broad and recognises that students taking this module are at different stages in their careers and have different roles within healthcare. It allows you to explore and write about leadership in a way that is meaningful to you. You are more likely to do well in an assignment when you write about something which interests you or with which you have had a close association. Always make sure that even your personal discussion is substantiated with relevant literature.

The following list is an example (but not exhaustive list) of what healthcare outcomes you could base your change initiative and discussion around either at an organisation or national level.

• Safety of nursing job
• Staff satisfaction and wellbeing
• Staff intent to leave
• Client/patient experience
• Nurse sensitive outcomes (Pneumonia, Urinary Tract Infection, Pressure Ulcer)
• Pressure ulcer incidence
• Falls incidence
• Nosocomial infection incidence
• UTI incidence
• Client/patient/family satisfaction with nursing care
• Client/patient/family satisfaction with pain management
• Unplanned hospital visits post discharge
• Vital signs status, self-care ability
• Symptom resolution/ reduction
• Waiting time of nursing care

Writing up your assignment
Drafting your assignment is not something you can do in a short period of time and the process should be commenced as soon as the module begins. You will see from the timetable when specific areas are being covered as part of the online content. You can review online lectures at any time and begin reading around the area you will write about.
When writing ensure that you:

• Maintain confidentiality of individuals and your organisation at all times
• Write in the first or third person, whichever is most comfortable for you

Introduction
Your assignment should begin with an introduction. The introduction will set the context for the assignment.
Your introduction should set out how you are going to address the statement so the reader knows what to expect throughout the assignment. The introduction provides context and signposts the rest of the work.
Main body
You will not be able to cover all of the concepts delivered during the module so please choose 3 concepts and discuss these in detail. Keeping in mind the learning outcomes for the module, potential concepts for discussion within the assignment are listed below. Do not pick all 3 topics from the same pillar. Using lecture content and additional reading to frame your assignment you should also use examples from practice to help in illustrating your discussion. Ensure that a coherent thread runs throughout the assignment
Conclusion
Your conclusion should tie the assignment together and remind the reader briefly about what has been discussed. You should not include any new information nor should any references appear in the conclusion.

Some concepts covered in the module:
Pillar 1:
